This year’s World Communications Day is celebrated on Sunday 4 May 2008 — the Feast of the Ascension.
In his message for the 42nd World Communications Day, the Holy Father speaks of the importance of defending and respecting human dignity in all areas of social communication. He says that ‘many people now think there is a need.. .for info- ethics, just as we have bioethics in the field of medicine and in scientific research linked to life’.
This year’s World Communications Day looks at the important role that the media plays in the lives of individuals and society at large. The Holy Father says that: ‘Truly, there is no area of human experience, especially given the vast phenomenon of globalization, in which the media have not become an integral part of interpersonal relations and of social, economic, political and religious development’.
Communications Sunday Prayer
O God, whose word is truth and in whose light we see light, guide those who tell the story of our times through word and image. Make them seekers after truth and advocates of human dignity. Grant discernment to all who rely on their labours, and, as we confront the pain and promise of this world, awaken in us a sense of wonder at your presence and of longing for your peace.
Please remember the work of communications professionals on World Communications Sunday.
The Catholic Communications Network provides support for the bishops of England and Wales in promoting the gospel in the media. There will be a second collection to support its work. The CCN depends on your generosity.

Each year, at Corpus Christi, Eucharistic Ministers who have served for five years stand down. As a result we need new Ministers for all three Sunday Masses. Please consider whether God is asking you to help serve your Parish in this role. New Ministers are invested at around Corpus Christi. It would be wonderful to welcome a wider cross section to the Ministry and we particularly would like to have more young people. If you have been Confirmed you can help in this important role.
Full training will be given and you only appear on the rota once every three weeks and swaps are easy!
Please contact me if you are interested and would like more details. I am usually at 8.30 Mass or Email/phone.

Please write letter of support
Sample letter
I am writing on behalf of Iranian Kurdish human rights defender Farhad Haji Mirza’I who is being held in Tehran’s Evin Prison, and is believed to have been mentally and physically tortured. I am writing to request details of the reasons for Farhad Haji Mirza’i’s arrest and any specific charges, trial sessions, evidence and any verdict that may have been passed against him.
I wish to express concern that he has reportedly been sentenced to death and calling, if true, for the sentence to be commuted. I also urge you to undertake full and immediate investigations into reports that he was tortured, to take the necessary steps to bring those responsible to justice and to ensure that he is not exposed to further torture or ill-treatment.
I urge you to ensure that he has regular access to his family and a lawyer of his choice as well as any medical treatment that he may require. If Farhad Haji Mirza’I has been detained solely in connection with his peaceful activities on behalf of Iran’s Kurdish community and women’s human rights, or with his peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression or association, then he is a prisoner of conscience, who should be released immediately and unconditionally; otherwise he should be released unless he is to be charged with a recognisably criminal offence and brought promptly to a fair trial.
